Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD)

CFD Modeling
The purpose of a CFD model is to mimic reality without the time or expense of creating a physical model. In order to accomplish this task, all of the physical conditions of the domain (geometry, physical obstructions, heat sources, airflow, extraction points, etc.) must be identified and input into the model as "boundary conditions". To create a preliminary representation of the building and surrounding area, a number of boundary conditions had to be determined and some assumptions had to be made.

Computational fluid dynamics software provides a tool that can be used to construct mathematical models of buildings and internal spaces, and to predict performance at a much higher level of detail than would be practical by actual field measurement of constructed systems. CFD analysis applied to buildings and systems produces colorful three-dimensional graphical images, which show air movement, particle movement and temperature distribution around a building or within a space.

When using CFD, a good portion of the analysis is completed with the completion of the model geometry. Airflow around the building is determined and potential contaminant problems defined.

CFD images are valuable tools in demonstrating and illustrating contaminant flows and associated problems, particularly to those who are unfamiliar with this concept. The principal simulation tool utilized in this study was a commercially available CFD program:

Flovent
Flovent. Flovent was developed by, and is supported by Flomerics Ltd., whose headquarters is in Surrey, UK. This program employs subsets of computational fluid dynamics algorithms that have been customized for use in simulation of ventilation systems and accurately model both natural and mechanically driven gas flows. Flomerics has validated the results of flow models using their software many times. They assure a "Flovent" software user that the CFD solution to a model will accurately represent the actual case scenario.
